Have you heard about Bino and Fino? Bino and Fino is an African educational cartoon about a brother and sister who live in a modern day city in sub- Saharan Africa. In each episode Bino and Fino, with the help of their friend Zeena the Magic Butterfly and their family, discover and learn things about the world. The show is for children mainly between the ages of 3 and 6. The series shows aspects of African history, culture and languages to children.
Introducing Bino and Fino
According to Bino and Fino creator, Adamu Waziri, there is a hunger for such programmes and parents feel let down by major broadcasters in this regard. The idea for the Bino and Fino cartoon series came about around 2007. The creator of the show, Adamu Waziri, realised that there was a massive lack of true African made children’s educational cartoon shows.
“I decided to start the Bino and Fino brand from a cultural and practical standpoint. Children love cartoons. However, most cartoons shown in Nigeria and other parts of Africa are foreign and imported. I felt there was a need to produce local animated educational content to cater for Nigerian and African families. Also my assessment of the market was that it was better to provide content people would value and need as opposed to providing a generic animation service for clients. At the time we started the business, animation production skills though sought after, are not valued by the local Nigerian market. Nigerian media agencies would rather outsource the high value jobs to South Africa, the U.K. etc. I didn’t feel we had the resources and connection to battle that head on.”
In Nigeria at the time there were no indigenous cartoon shows that showed children a reflection of themselves. All the cartoon shows were imported and had no link to Africa in anyway. With little resources Adamu and his team set about to help change the status quo. It is the first of its kind to come from Nigeria.
The Bino and Fino Nigerian educational cartoon was created to give parents looking for genuine African educational content for their children to watch more of a choice. The show is for parents, schools, home-schoolers and others who are finding it difficult to find positive, fun, educational content about Africa for their children to watch.
Bino and Fino is produced by EVCL which is an animation studio based in Abuja, Nigeria. Bino and Fino are on German tour. What I really like about Bino and Fino, that it is made for kids all over the world. As a child I would have enjoyed it as I do even now as an adult.
