Ghana Day Names for Monday

Have you heard about the Akan people of Ghana and Ivory Coast who frequently name their children after the day of the week they were born? These “day names” have further meanings concerning the soul and character of the person.  These day names have spread throughout Ghana and Jamaica.

Most Ghanaians have at least one name from this system, even if they also have an English or Christian name. Notable figures with day names include Ghana’s first president Kwame Nkrumah and former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

This week I would like to introduce you to the day names of the Akan people using images by Creō.  The female for Monday name is Adwoa and the male name is Kwadwo or Kojo.

Who is Adwoa?

Adwoa appears to be someone who is determined and original, bursting with vitality and a zest for life. Bold and resourceful, she enjoys taking risks, and is often quick to assume the role of the leader, although she is also particularly feminine and maternal, and enjoys taking care of others. Furthermore, her manner is generally warm and reassuring, because Adwoa is eager to please other people.

This could be expressed through a friendly attitude, or perhaps in taking great care of her appearance… In any case she´s the real thing, uncompromising, frank and direct – and fiercely loyal. She is extremely sensitive and simply can’t tolerate injustice, if she witnesses unfair treatment she usually won’t hesitate to intervene. She is highly energetic and capable of summoning up more motivation for others than for herself, whilst competition doesn’t worry her much at all.

Who is Kwadwo or Kojo?

Physically strong and masculine, Kwadwo is rather magnetic and emanates self-confidence. But one should never judge a book by its cover, and while it is true that Kwadwo is dynamic, resourceful, resolute and can even appear gruff or abrupt; he is a big softie, first and foremost.

However, Kwadwo also cares deeply about others. His sensitivity can be overwhelming and his emotions intense, making him just as capable of great generosity as fierce rage or even violence. He wants to be liked and admired, but never really forgets the ascendancy that he has over others. Difficulty stimulates him and he willingly fights, objects and seeks confrontation. He is extremely argumentative, and although he is essentially individualistic, he often needs other people’s help to succeed. If he participates in group or associative activities (political, sport-related or other), he will want to be the leader! He appreciates material wealth and the finer things in life, so he is far from indifferent to the financial sphere.
