Why you will love her music:
Day was discovered by Stevie Wonder himself while she was performing in a local nightclub. Andra filmed a series of popular YouTube covers such as Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)”, Jessie J’s “Mamma Knows Best” and many more.
By going against the prototypical style and sounds of today’s mainstream pop artists, Day has found a way to carve her own lane and find success within that path. But it has also given her the room to explore topics that are viewed as taboo. When infidelity is expressed in today’s music, it’s often from the apologetic male’s perspective or a female who becomes fed up with the male’s antics. On the song “Gold,” Day shares how she cheated in a past relationship. (Source: rollingout)

More about Andra Day
Born and raised in San Diego, Andra Day grew up singing contemporary Christian music in church as well as studying at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts.
“I’m not going to put myself in a box,” she says. “Whichever chord progressions move me, whether it’s rock, jazz, doo-wop or soul, I’m going to put it together and not be worried about whether people can put it in a lane or not.”
Her style is unique. A multicolored head wrap served as her signature piece. Head wraps have become a significant part of her brand. Day explained the significance of never leaving home without a head wrap.
