How To Choose The Best Foundation Shade for You

16. October 2015

Do you need help by finding the correct foundation for your skin tone?

This week Denise Rabor, Founder of Wow Beauty has answered one of the most difficult make up questions. How do you choose your foundation? Three weeks ago we asked you to send us your toughest makeup and beauty questions.

Denise Rabor has been an international makeup artist for over 15 years and she is as mad about beauty now as she was when she started. She has worked with Alek Wek  and many more models. Today, Denise will answer your questions. Be prepared to become a makeup pro.

Which foundation shade is best for you?

Reader Question: Do you have a tip how to choose the correct foundation in general and also for summer and maybe also for winter?

Denise Rabor: The first step to choosing a good foundation shade is to know your skin type for example if you have oily or combination skin you might want a product that is oil free, equally if you have sensitive skin, you’ll want brands that are hypoallergenic and/ or as free from chemicals as possible.

Next you need to discover your skins general undertones….most of us are either yellow or red or warm or cool, but interestingly many of us are a combination of both. Tip: remember that your face is part of your body, so when buying foundation look at your neck and décolleté too, this will give you a truer idea of your skins undertones.

Sometimes what looks good on a display stand, may not translate as well when you get it home, so where ever possible use daylight to choose shades, and if you can’t another tip is to ask for a sample of the foundation that you like or take a couple of 5ml tester bottles with you and ask for samples….that way you can really ‘try before you buy’+ allow the foundation to warm up on your skin before you decide if it’s right for you, sometimes you need to allow a few minutes for the foundation to settle into your skin before you can see how perfect it is.

Next you need to discover which brands do the shades that works best for you; I say shades because most women need at least 2 foundations in their makeup kit, one for winter and one for summer, when we are hopefully sun kissed.

You’ll know when you’ve got it right because your skin will look like your skin, your face will match the rest of your body and you will look great. Please, please, please remember that foundation is not meant to be a mask …it is designed to skin perfect and enhance your skin, not hide it.

There are lots to choose from so here are a few that are worth checking out:
